There Is So Much More to Africa Than Safaris

Bazaruto Archipelago resort in Africa

If you think Africa is all desert and savannah plains, you’re incorrect. Its landscapes are as diverse as they are breathtaking, a liberal helping of pretty beaches, charming towns, and stunning panoramic views.

Here are my picks for two of the most beautiful places in Africa:

1. Bazaruto Archipelago, Mozambique

Mozambique’s long coastline is lined with many unspoiled and stunningly attractive beaches, none more so than the sands of the Bazaruto Archipelago just offshore. Its clear turquoise waters are home to a plethora of marine life, including sea turtles and dugongs.

The archipelago is made up of five islands:

  • Bazaruto Island
  • Benguerra Island
  • Santa Carolina
  • Magaruque
  • Banque

Indeed, these idyllic islands are famous for their natural beauty and diverse ecologies. The pristine coral reefs are home to more than 2000 fish species as well as whales and dolphins.

As a world-class diving hotspot, a honeymoon haven and a must-do beach getaway, Mozambique’s Bazaruto Archipelago sets the bar pretty high as a holiday destination.

Bazaruto Archipelago brims with incredible dive sites that are rated as being among the best in the world, where avid divers have become regular visitors. It is also an ideal place for first-timers to take the plunge.

For those who prefer to keep their heads above water, the untouched, remote beaches beckon. Set sail the waters in an old wooden dhow boat to the abandoned Carolina Island or soak up that laid-back island living. It really is the perfect addition to a southern Africa safari. The archipelago’s excellent variety of water and land-based activities adds a good dose of fun to your ocean experience (for when you are ready to leave your sunlounger).

2. Uganda’s Tea Country

Many of us associate tea growing with the hill country of India and Sri Lanka, but East Africa’s soil and climate are equally suitable.

Tea is an important crop commodity in Uganda. Close to 80,000 farming households are involved in tea production and it supports over 150,000 skilled and unskilled workers. Approximately, 1,000,000 people directly derive their livelihood from tea growing.

Uganda’s lush and verdant farms form some of the country’s most photogenic landscapes and I love to explore the area and take in these breathtaking vistas.

While many travelers visit Uganda to experience the unforgettable gorillas, while on your way be sure to add two extra days to discover the beauty of Uganda.
