Utah’s New Gateside by TSA PreCheck Program
You Can Now Go to the Gate Without a Plane Ticket at Salt Lake City International Airport
I will never forget saying goodbye to my family in a Salt Lake City airport terminal years go as I prepared to board a plane bound for San Pedro Sula, Honduras (via Miami). There was just something about being able to see their faces, their smiles, and to hug them once last time before I picked up my carry-on and headed for the gate.
And yes, my mom was bawling her eyes out.
And then, 9/11 happened and our world, and the airport experience, all changed. For decades, saying goodbye to a traveler at the airport has usually meant parting ways at the security checkpoing inside or curbside outside while other cars honk at you to move.
However, a new TSA program being offered at Salt Lake City International Airport is bringing back a little of the way air travel used to be and I, for one, am thrilled.
What Is Gateside by TSA PreCheck?
Gateside allows eligible TSA PreCheck members to request a free pass to access the secure side of participating airports without having an airline ticket.
That means you could potentially:
- Walk a family member or loved one all the way to their departure gate
- Meet someone at the gate when their flight arrives
- Spend time with a friend or family member during a long layover
- Accompany loved ones farther into the airport before saying goodbye
- Visit restaurants and shops located beyond the security checkpoint
- Experience Salt Lake City’s new airport terminals without taking a flight.
For Utah families, the ability to meet arriving passengers at the gate could be particularly meaningful when welcoming home missionaries, military service members, students, family members and others returning after being away.
Just remember, not all the people cheering when you step off the plane are there for you.
How Do You Get a Gateside Pass?
The program isn’t designed for someone to simply show up at the airport and walk through security.
Participants must be eligible TSA PreCheck members and request a Gateside pass online one to three days before their planned airport visit.
Applicants provide their Known Traveler Number (KTN) and select the participating airport they plan to visit.
Once approved, visitors must bring a REAL ID or another TSA-accepted form of identification to the airport and still go through TSA security screening.
There is currently no charge for the Gateside pass.
Does a Gateside Pass Let You Skip Security?
No.
Although you don’t need an airline ticket, you are still entering the secure portion of an airport. Gateside visitors are therefore subject to TSA security screening just like passengers.
Approval for a Gateside pass also isn’t the same thing as having an airline boarding pass. The program simply gives an approved visitor permission to enter the secure terminal area for the approved day.
A Return to an Old Airport Tradition
Gateside by TSA PreCheck represents a limited return of that experience for approved trusted travelers while maintaining today’s airport security screening requirements.
For many travelers, it could make some of life’s most memorable airport moments a little more personal again.
Instead of waving goodbye before security, families can potentially share those final minutes together at the gate.
And instead of waiting near baggage claim for someone special to come home, they may be able to be there when the traveler walks off the plane.
Planning a Trip?
Airport procedures and participating locations can change, so travelers and visitors should always verify current Gateside requirements with TSA and Salt Lake City International Airport before making plans.
And whether you’re meeting someone at the gate or preparing for your own next adventure, a little advance planning can make the airport experience—and the entire trip—much easier.
