An Occasion to Celebrate: With a Danube River Cruise

My husband and I were celebrating our 35th wedding anniversary in 2016. We decided to take a vacation to document this incredible occasion. Having lived and traveled together for many years we know what works for each of us. Both of us love to explore cities by walking, eating and meeting the locals but my husband does not like crowds and I don’t like wasting time in airports and train stations.

We decided on a Danube River cruise with AMA Waterways. AMA Waterways offer small vessels that transport approximately 150 passengers though 3 countries in 7 days. You can board the ship, unpack and begin your adventure. Our trip began with the illumination cruise around the riverfront of Budapest Hungary. Some of the highlights were the Parliament building and the beautiful lighted bridges we sailed under.

The on board accommodations, service and food were outstanding. This is all included along with beer, wine and soda with lunch and dinner. Ama includes several shore excursions to choose from at each stop. The excursions offered give you the option for gentle, regular or an active tour pace. We prefer the active pace and had several choices including bike tours with bikes provided by AMA. This picture is from our hike to the castle high above the lovely city of Durstein where Richard the lion hearted was imprisoned in 1192.

The week flew by. We visited a new city each day with time to explore on the included excursions and later on our own; never rushed or hurried. One of the highlights of our trip was a visit to Salzburg, Austria. We did a short walking tour of the city and was left time to eat lunch and browse the quaint streets with the locals enjoying the beauty of their city.

This was truly an exceptional vacation. I would highly recommend it. We are already planning a Rhine River cruise for our 40th anniversary in December when the Christmas markets are alive with the customs and traditions of Germany – I can hardly wait!
