Hosting a Mediterranean Journey: Cruising Venice to Athens Aboard Explora I

As a passionate traveler and cruise host, I recently had the pleasure of leading a group aboard Explora I, an elegant small ship, on a journey through the Adriatic and Aegean Seas. This itinerary—featuring Venice, Ravenna, Brindisi, Dubrovnik, Lefkada, and Athens—was a perfect blend of culture, scenery, and relaxed luxury. Whether you’re a seasoned cruiser or new to the small-ship experience, this voyage offered something special at every turn.

Venice – A Grand Beginning

We began our journey in Venice, and there truly is no better city to set the tone for an unforgettable cruise. I arrived early to explore the iconic canals, St. Mark’s Square, and the Rialto Bridge. As we embarked aboard Explora I, the excitement among our hosted group was palpable. Sailing away through the Venetian Lagoon, with the city’s domes and bell towers fading into the distance, was a moment none of us will forget.

Ravenna – Hidden Treasures

Our first stop, Ravenna, offered a quieter, more introspective day. As a host, I encouraged guests to explore on their own or join a small excursion to see the city’s renowned mosaics. The Basilica of San Vitale and the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia left a lasting impression. Brindisi – Coastal Charm and Roman Roots

In Brindisi, we stepped into an ancient port city with a relaxed pace. I joined fellow guests on a walk along the harbor promenade, past Roman columns and small cafés. For many in our group, it was a favorite “off-the-beaten-path” stop. This port was ideal for cruisers seeking an authentic Italian experience without large crowds—a hidden gem for sure.

Dubrovnik – Walled Wonder

Dubrovnik is always a favorite, and it didn’t disappoint. We docked close to the Old Town, a huge advantage with Explora I’s small-ship design. I led a walking group along the city walls, offering sweeping views of the Adriatic and terracotta rooftops. Some guests explored filming locations from Game of Thrones, while others shopped or sipped wine in the squares. It was a lively, unforgettable day filled with culture and charm.

Lefkada – Greece’s Best-Kept Secret

Lefkada was a highlight for our entire group. This unspoiled Greek island offered stunning views and a truly authentic feel. I hosted a beach outing to Porto Katsiki, where the cliffs and crystal-clear water felt straight out of a travel magazine. Guests loved the slow pace, friendly locals, and the chance to explore a Greek destination that still feels undiscovered.

Athens – A Grand Finale

We concluded in Athens, a city that never fails to inspire. I arranged a group excursion to the Acropolis, where we stood in awe of the Parthenon and took in sweeping views of the city. The nearby Plaka neighborhood was perfect for shopping and lunch before we said our goodbyes. It was the perfect final chapter to our Mediterranean cruise.
