Exploring New Zealand with Delta Vacations and Tourism New Zealand

I recently had the pleasure of visiting New Zealand with Delta Vacations and Tourism New Zealand and it was an unforgettable experience!

Day 1: Arrival in Queenstown

New Zealand has always seemed like a far away dream destination to me, so when Delta Vacations and Tourism New Zealand invited me on this trip of a lifetime I was so excited! We flew nonstop from Los Angeles to Auckland with Delta Airlines, this nonstop flight did not feel any longer to me than the SLC to Amsterdam or Paris. We arrived early at 7:55 a.m. After a quick transfer to the domestic terminal, we boarded Jetstar for the short flight to Queenstown on the South Island. We had a warm Kiwi welcome from our driver with Alpine Luxury Tours. As we started our drive through town, I was immediately struck by Queenstown’s beauty. It felt like a cleaner, more scenic version of Park City, with the mountain range called the Remarkable Mountains towering over Lake Wakatipu. After checking in at the very nice Holiday Inn Express, we enjoyed lunch at The Grille by Eichardt’s, followed by a lovely walking tour of Queenstown’s charming shops and eateries. The day ended with a gondola ride up Skyline Adventure Park for spectacular views, topped off with a fun luge ride down the mountain.

Day 2: Scenic Flights and Thrills in Queenstown

The next day started with a jaw-dropping scenic flight over Queenstown with The Helicopter Line, culminating in a landing atop the Remarkable Mountains. The views were unforgettable! After the flight, we headed to AJ Hackett Kawarau, where some of the group zipped across the famous Kawarau Bridge, home to the world’s first bungy jump. Though I opted for the zipline instead of bungy jumping it was fun to watch the brave few. We then had a delicious outdoor lunch at Kinross Winery, and then toured the beautiful vineyard.

Day 3: Adventures in Nature

We started with an off-road jeep ride with Nomad Safaris, including a stop at a few Lord of the Ring’s filming locations. Then we met up with Dart River Wilderness Jet Experience, where we had a thrilling ride through rugged landscapes. We enjoyed a light lunch at Mrs Woolly’s General Store before heading to the TSS Earnslaw for a picturesque boat cruise to Walter Peak Farm. The historic steamboat, which is as old as the Titanic, was a fun way to travel to the Walter Peak Restaurant, where we had a delicious buffet with many choices. After dinner we were entertained with a farm show.

Day 4: Kaikōura’s Culinary Delight

On day four, we flew to Christchurch with Air New Zealand and then drove to the coastal town of Kaikōura. There, we were lucky to attend a half-day cooking class at the Hapuku Kitchen, hosted by a renowned chef from “Top Chef Australia.” It was amazing, using fresh herbs and vegetables that we picked right from the garden surrounding their home. We spent the night at the Sudima Kaikōura hotel.

Day 5: Dolphins and Outdoor Fun

Our fifth day was packed, we started with dolphin watching with Dolphin Encounter Kaikoura. We then headed to EcoZip Adventures for an exhilarating ziplining experience. In the evening, we enjoyed a short kayaking tour with Kaikoura Kayaks before a delicious dinner at Hiku Restaurant.

Day 6: Scenic Marlborough

The following day, we explored the Marlborough region, starting with a visit to Ohau Point Seal Colony and a stroll through the stunning rose garden at Pollard Park in Blenheim. A scenic drive took us to Picton, where we boarded the Seafood Odyssea Marlborough Sounds Cruise. The cruise featured tastings of fresh, local seafood, offering a fun and flavorful experience. We spent the night at the cozy Furneaux Lodge, nestled in a natural paradise, and enjoyed a delicious dinner at its restaurant.

Day 7: Kayaking and Scenic Site

On day seven, we started with a kayaking tour across Queen Charlotte Sound, accompanied by Wilderness Guides. The tranquil waters and surrounding beauty were gorgeous. After kayaking, we visited Punga Cove Resort for a site inspection, then traveled by water taxi to the Bay of Many Coves Resort, where we had a delicious lunch and admired the breathtaking views. The day continued with a visit to the Arapawa Pearl Farm, where we learned about the fascinating process of pearl harvesting.

Day 8: E-Biking Through Marlborough’s Wineries

Day eight was dedicated to exploring Marlborough’s renowned wineries, where the group embarked on an e-biking tour. We visited Cloudy Bay Winery, Vines Village, Forrest Wines, and Mahi Wines. While I’m not a wine drinker, the rest of the group enjoyed wine tastings, and I was treated to refreshing mocktails. Afterward, we headed to the airport for a flight back to Auckland.

Day 9: Waiheke Island Exploration

On day nine, we set off for Waiheke Island, a short ferry ride from Auckland. Upon arrival, we were greeted by Ananda Tours, who took us to Allpress Olive Groves for an olive oil tasting. Next, we enjoyed a tea-blending experience at Timmy Smith before having some free time to explore Oneroa Village. Then we had a scenic lunch at the outdoor Casita Miro restaurant, overlooking the island’s landscape. We returned to Auckland in the evening, where we enjoyed a pre-dinner reception at Voco Auckland City before dining at The Hotel Britomart.

Day 10: All Blacks Experience and Departure

On our final day, we had an early breakfast before heading to the All Blacks Experience, an exciting tour that immerses visitors in New Zealand’s legendary rugby culture. After the tour, we were driven to the airport for our flight back home, reflecting on the incredible landscapes, unforgettable experiences, and the warm hospitality of New Zealand.

Concluding Thoughts

This trip, organized by Delta Vacations and Tourism New Zealand, was truly the adventure of a lifetime. From thrilling outdoor activities to peaceful moments surrounded by nature, New Zealand exceeded all my expectations!
