Ketchikan: Culture, Color, and Rainy-Day Charm

Our first port, Ketchikan, welcomed us with its famous drizzle and even more famous hospitality. I often tell clients not to let the weather dampen their plans here, it’s part of the authentic experience. We visited Creek Street, a historic district with shops perched over the water on stilts. The blend of old frontier spirit and local artistry is impossible to resist.

We also joined a guided tour of the Totem Heritage Center, where I deepened my understanding of the Tlingit and Haida cultures. Seeing these carvings up close, and learning their symbolism, was a moving reminder of the deep roots and stories tied to this land.

Icy Strait Point: Wild Encounters in Paradise

Icy Strait Point is a port I frequently recommend for clients seeking a more authentic, less commercialized Alaskan experience—and it fully lived up to its reputation. Owned and operated by the Huna Tlingit people, it offers an opportunity to engage with Alaska on a deeper, more respectful level.

I chose a Wildlife Bear tour, our guide, a local resident, spoke not only of wildlife, but of the community’s efforts to preserve their culture and environment. It added richness and context that elevated the whole experience.

Skagway: Riding the Rails Through Gold Rush History

In Skagway, the past comes alive in vivid detail. The town still echoes with the spirit of the 1890s Gold Rush, and the White Pass & Yukon Route Railway remains one of the most iconic excursions in all of Alaska cruising.

We boarded the train for a breathtaking ride up the narrow-gauge tracks, climbing nearly 3,000 feet in under 20 miles. The engineering alone is astonishing, but it’s the views—glacial valleys, sheer drops, waterfalls, and snow-dusted peaks—that make this a must-do. As an advisor, I now speak from experience when I say: book this one early. It sells out for a reason.

After the ride, we strolled through town, chatting with shopkeepers and enjoying some fish and chips in a local Tavern, Skagway may be small, but it’s packed with character.

Seward to Anchorage: From Sea to Summit

Disembarking in Seward, many passengers rushed straight to the airport, but we opted for the scenic train transfer to Anchorage—something I now strongly recommend to clients. The Alaska Railroad Coastal Classic route winds through valleys and along the coast and offers views that are impossible to see from the highway.

In Anchorage, we wrapped up our trip with a walk through downtown, a stop at the Anchorage Museum, and a dinner of freshly caught halibut. It’s a city that balances modern life with untamed wilderness just minutes away.

Final Thoughts

As a travel advisor, this journey was invaluable. We can say we speak from experience about everything from balcony stateroom views of glaciers to the best excursions in each port. But more than that, I came away with a personal connection to a place I’ve long admired.
